Background of the study
This study explores how cultural adaptation influences the translation of social media content into Nigerian Pidgin. As social media becomes an essential platform for communication, translating content into Nigerian Pidgin has emerged as a strategy to engage diverse audiences in Nigeria and beyond (Okoro, 2023). Cultural adaptation in translation involves modifying content to reflect local cultural references, humor, and idiomatic expressions, thereby enhancing relatability and comprehension. This study analyzes social media posts, advertisements, and digital news articles translated into Nigerian Pidgin. It examines how translators navigate cultural nuances and adjust content to resonate with the target audience while maintaining the original message’s integrity. Data are collected through content analysis, translator interviews, and user feedback surveys. The findings will highlight both the benefits and challenges of cultural adaptation in digital communication, offering recommendations for improving translation practices that support effective cross-cultural engagement.

Statement of the problem
Translating social media content into Nigerian Pidgin faces challenges in cultural adaptation, as literal translations often fail to capture local idioms and cultural references (Okoro, 2023). Inadequate adaptation may lead to messages that are misunderstood or lack engagement, reducing the effectiveness of digital communication. Moreover, inconsistencies in translation practices can create a fragmented online experience for users. This study seeks to identify the specific challenges associated with culturally adapting content for Nigerian Pidgin and to assess their impact on user engagement and message clarity. The goal is to propose strategies to improve cultural adaptation in translation, ensuring that social media content remains relevant and impactful.

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate current translation practices for Nigerian Pidgin social media content.

To identify challenges in cultural adaptation during translation.

To recommend strategies for enhancing cultural resonance in digital translations.

Research questions:

How is cultural adaptation currently implemented in Nigerian Pidgin translations?

What challenges hinder effective cultural adaptation?

What measures can improve translation outcomes for social media content?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the role of cultural adaptation in enhancing Nigerian Pidgin translations for social media, contributing to more effective digital communication. The insights will benefit translators, digital marketers, and platform developers in creating content that resonates with diverse audiences (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to social media content translated into Nigerian Pidgin, focusing on cultural adaptation and audience feedback.

Definitions of terms:

Cultural adaptation: Modifying content to suit the target culture’s linguistic and social nuances.

Social media content: Information disseminated through digital platforms.

Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used for informal communication in Nigeria.
